The plot of a story is the action.  The plot revolves around a conflict or problem.  There are five main types of conflicts:
  • Person vs. person (problem with another character)
  • Person vs. society (problem with the laws or beliefs of a group)
  • Person vs. nature (problem with force of nature such as a blizzard)
  • Person vs. self (problem with deciding what to do or think)
  • Person vs. fate (problem that seems to be uncontrollable)
That struggle builds until it reaches a crisis or a turning point.  That moment is the climax.
  1. Describe one conflict in the novel.
  2. How would you have reacted if you were facing that same conflict?
  3. Respond to a classmate's comment about the conflict.
Example: I think that the main conflict in The Summer of the Swans is that Charlie wanders off and Sara has to go find him.  This is a a person vs. person conflict because she is having a problem with another person.  I also think it might be a person vs. self because she had to decide what to do about it.  I think I would have done the same thing.  I would have felt too guilty if something had happened to him and I didn't do anything about it.

  1. I think the main conflict in Red Midnight is person vs nature and person vs self.Because the main character,Santiago must brave the ocean and the danger it holds. Also i think it's a person vs self conflict because Santiago must fight sleep to keep he and his sister alive while in the ocean.I would have done the same thing. I would probably be to scared to sleep. Timmy Drake 3 perod.

  2. Hi Mrs. O'Brien! Kyle A. here from 6th period. The main conflict(s) in "Red Midnitght" would be either person vs. nature or person vs. society. I picked person vs. nature because Santiago and Angelina are traveling in open ocean and fighting against storms. I also picked person vs. society because Guatemala's soldiers, the geurillas, basically turned down on them. Can't wait to see what happens next!!!

  6. in my opinion there are 4 plots in the story person vs socity because the soljiers are a socity and they are running away from them and are very scard of them
Person vs nature because they are figthing alive to stay alive in the ocean and have limeted food.
Person vs self because he is always douting himself that he wont make it to the USA.
And last but not least person vs fate you could use that one to because he is struggling to stay awake and if he falls asleep the cayco will tip andhim and his sister would drown to death

  8. Timmy D here!I got a little farther in red midnight.I know now that Santiago is not fighting soldiers or gurrillas. His real threat is Fighting sleep storms and most of all hunger. This is more of a person vs nature and self rather than person vs person and society.I dissagre with person vs fate because santiago can avoid falling asleep.Timmy D 3 period

  10. Mrs. O'Brien here-- you make many good points. Be careful-- the conflict of the story is the problem the characters are dealing with or the goal they are trying to reach. The conflict is not just about one plot event. I agree with most of these comments about the conflict being person vs. nature. It is definitely a survival story and there are many plot events to support this. I still think the climax is when the boat tips over. It is a very action packed and dramatic scene. We have not seen them solve their problem yet because that will come in the falling action. What do you think?

  12. The conflict is person vs. nature. If I was facing this I probably wouldn't make it. I agree with Timmy D. because they aren't trying to escape the soliders anymore but they are now facing the power of nature. Good luck Santiago and Angelina!

CHRIS!! i do not think it has 4 conflicts this far into the book in fact,he has not seen a single soul since he saw the pirates. He has only seen his sister. it really seems like a person vs nature and a little bit of person vs self because he has to fight sleep and storms.he is not fighting soldiers or gurrillas.Timmy Drake 3rd period is out,PEACE!!!

  24. I think its Person vs. Self because Santiago has to face his memories of his family, and it must really hurt because they are dead and he misses them so much. I also think its Person Vs. Nature because of the ocean, the sharks and all of the dangers. He has to fight the waves, and he suffers from not having a lot ot eat and by sitting in the sun all day.ALso, he suffers from the huge cut on his head, it makes him weaker, so it makes it more hard.

  28. I love your conversation! Good job "discussing." Let me get my two cents into this one. Remember that the conflict of a story is introduced at the beginning of the book. It is an over arching problem that the character is trying to deal with for most of the book. Or it could be a goal the main character is trying to reach during most of the book.

I think the conflict of Red Midnight is that Santiago is trying to reach America in order to tell about the horrible things going on in Guatemala.

The climax is the big exciting scene. It is the turning point of the story. I think the climax of Red Midnight is when they fall over board in the Gulf. Remember when Angelina was screaming and the waves were screaming?

The falling action is where the problem of the story is solved or the goal is reached. I think that the falling action is when they made it to America and told their story to the media.
