As is described in our red Reader's Handbook, point of view is the vantage point from which a story is told.
  • First peron pint of view is where the story is told by one of the charcters.  We are limited to knowing only what that character knows, thinks and feels.  How do you know if it is first peron point of view?  The character uses pronouns such as I or we and usually participates in much of the action.
  • Third person omniscient (all knowing) is where the story is told by a narrator who is not a charcter in the story.  The narrator will relate the thoughts and feelings of all the characters.  We know how everyone thinks and feels.  The narrator will use pronouns such as she, he, and they.
  • Third person limited is the most common point of view.  This is where the story is told by a narrator.  However, the narrator will relate the thoughs and feelings of just one character, usually the main character.  We do not know how the other characters are feeling and thinking.  Again, she, he and they will be used as pronouns.
  1. Who is telling the story in your novel?
  2. What point of view is this?
  3. Think about the story from a viewpoint of a different character.  How would the story be different? What details would be left out or added?
The story, The Kid Comes Back by John R. Unis, is told from Roy's point of view.  He is the main character, but he is not telling the story, a narrator is telling it.  So this is called third person limited.  We only know how Roy is feeling and what he is thinking.  He is angry because the mechanics don't seem to be aware of the danger of war.  The story would be different if it were told from the point of view of one of the mechanics because we wouldn't hear how afraid the gunners are up in the war planes.

  1. Hi Mrs O'Brien!Michael R. from your 6th period class. In Red Midnight I think it is a first person point of view because,Santiago is telling the not a narrator. The reason I said it was a first person was because in the book it says I and we can hear how scared Santiago was when the cayuco tipped and almost fell into the ocean. From your 6th period class Michael R.

  10. Santiago is telling the story. It's in 1st person. If instead of Santiago say the story and it was Angelina telling it then it would be different because 1. Angelina's a girl and 2. She's 4 years old. There would be a big difference then. Brooke N. 7th period :)

  16. I'm glad you wrote on here that you don't quite understand point of view yet. This way I can clear things up before the quiz.

I encourage you to go back and read the comments made by your classmates. They have a lot of smart things to say about point of view.

The point of view of Red Midnight is first person point of view. First person is when the story is told by one of the characters-- in this case the story is told by Santiago. We know his inner thoughts and feelings. We do not know the inner thoughts or feelings of any other character-- unless they tell us out loud and we read about it in dialogue. We also know it is first person because the author uses pronouns such as 'I' and 'we' and 'me.' These pronouns are not a part of dialogue.

A passage which supports my claim is right at the beginning of the book. "I try to forget the night they burned my village. Those memories are like clouds in my mind. But some times the clouds lift, and again I hear screams and soldiers shouting and guns exploding."

Notice how we see the pronoun 'I.' Also notice how we are told how Santiago is feeling and what he is thinking inside his head.

    Hope this helps!
